Sherrone Moore, the head coach of the University of Michigan Wolverines football team, was arrested on Wednesday. This happened only hours after the university had shockingly fired him from his position. Police arrested the 39-year-old coach in an Orlando suburb on charges of felony assault. This shocking incident should lead to very troubling questions about how he could act in such a way while heading one of college football’s most hallowed programs.
The incident occurred around 16:10 EST (21:10 GMT) when police responded to reports of an alleged assault involving Moore. After the incident, he was temporarily placed in a Washtenaw County jail as prosecutors considered charges.
In a statement, the University of Michigan announced that an investigation had found “credible evidence” that Moore had “engaged in an inappropriate relationship with a staff member.” This conduct “constitutes a clear violation of university policy,” according to Warde Manuel, the university’s athletic director. The university has stressed the need to continue taking a zero-tolerance approach to that behavior.
In 2018, Moore moved on to the Michigan Wolverines, where he served as tight-end coach. He soon climbed to take over as acting head coach in 2023 after Jim Harbaugh took an opportunity in the NFL. Under Moore’s leadership, the team went 3-0 during Moore’s tenure as acting head coach. He was set to lead the Wolverines in their upcoming rivalry game against the University of Texas on December 31 in the Cheez-It Citrus Bowl.
In the wake of his firing, Biff Poggi has been named interim head coach of the Wolverines. The swift replacement indicates the university’s urgent response to the allegations against Moore and its desire to maintain stability within the football program.

Whether Moore will get charged or not is still up in the air. The inquiry continues, with more information likely to come out in the coming days.
