Nigella Lawson Launches Pub to Support Young People with Learning Disabilities

Nigella Lawson, the award-winning food writer and television chef, has recently rehabbed her own new joint “The North Star.” We hope you’ll join us in Brighton for it! This unique firm focuses on getting young adults with learning disabilities or autism ready for work placements. Opening the launch events was Baroness Rosa Monckton, founder of the initiative. She developed this project in memory of her daughter, Domenica, who has Down’s syndrome.

The North Star addresses an urgent need as shown by NHS data. Just 4.8% of adults with learning disabilities and autism in England are in paid employment. Lawson & Monckton feel that this pub will help build self-confidence in young people. Increasingly, they want to develop a deeper sense of community and connection among their residents.

Baroness Monckton also conveyed her passion for empowering youth through this project. “Our main goal is to empower… and help them gain paid employment,” she stated. This belief fuels The North Star’s work and purpose. The organization’s efforts are focused on providing the most relevant hands-on training and support, tailored to address the specific needs of their staff.

Georgia Pink, who is a part of the creative project, highlighted the need to feel appreciated while at work. “Feeling appreciated by employers and colleagues is really important,” she noted. Pink echoed these sentiments by emphasizing that all people deserve a chance to make a meaningful contribution to the world. “Everyone should have the right to do that,” she added.

The North Star is a colorful, inclusive pub that loves to host. It’s a valuable training ground too, equipping the next generation with the skills they need to succeed in the workforce. The North Star truly rolls out the red carpet to get you there. It helps them to build a more positive environment of acceptance and support for people with learning disabilities and autism.
