Mikhail Baryshnikov and Janet Jackson were on storied “Dancing with the Stars,” which will celebrate its 20th anniversary November 11, 2023. The show, which has captivated audiences since its inception in 2005, will honor its legacy with a special episode featuring memorable performances and highlights from the past two decades. The series is now deep into its 34th season. It features an emotionally charged blend of hopeful contestants and renowned professional dancers, who all contribute new threads to the long, colorful tapestry of this popular competition’s history.
The journey began in 2005 when Kelly Monaco became the first winner of “Dancing with the Stars,” taking home the coveted Mirrorball Trophy alongside her professional partner, Alec Mazo. That amazing movement was started by this momentous occasion. As the years have gone on, over 400 other celebrities have participated. In 2006, Emmitt Smith became the first NFL player to win the competition, making history. He paired with dancer Cheryl Burke and they won the trophy together.
In the years to come, “Dancing with the Stars” continued making strides in representation and inclusivity. In 2013 one wise young woman made history by becoming the first African American female winner of the competition. Though her name now goes unremembered, this victory marked the first time this ground-breaking show was known for spotlighting vibrant talent across the diaspora. Subsequently, in 2014, Amy Purdy, a double amputee, captured hearts and finished in second place with professional partner Derek Hough, further demonstrating the show’s ability to inspire and uplift.
The competition was very dynamic and ever expanding. With the victory of deaf dancer Nyle DiMarco in 2016, that’s exactly what happened—reminding the world that determination is a language of its own. Each season has introduced unique challenges and triumphs for contestants, with over 51 professional dancers having graced the stage and many achieving household name status.
With Jenna Johnson, JoJo Siwa turned history on its head in 2021. They made history by being the first same-sex pairing to compete on the show, a historic and unprecedented moment. Later that year, Iman Shumpert broke barriers, becoming the first NBA player to win “Dancing with the Stars.” As a result, he and his professional partner, Daniella Karagach, won the coveted Mirrorball Trophy. These milestones are representative of a more conducive and progressive shift within the competition, welcoming celebrations of love and diversity in broader strokes.
Head judge Len Goodman—much adored since the show’s launch—retired in 2022 after a remarkable 31 seasons. Although he has passed, his legacy lives on as the Mirrorball Trophy was renamed in his honor after his death. Goodman’s contributions have been instrumental in shaping the show’s identity and maintaining high standards of performance.
“Dancing with the Stars” is celebrating its 30th season anniversary! Look forward to thrilling guest visits from former contestants and other luminaries. Tom Bergeron, the beloved original host, will come back as a guest judge for this special event.
