On a recent trip to Brazil, Prince William paid tribute to his late mother, Princess Diana. To take the picture, he re-staged an iconic photo of her taken decades before in front of the country’s famous statue of Christ the Redeemer. It was an opportune moment, given that this marked his attendance at the inaugural Earthshot Prize events, intended to foster a global network of environmental innovators.
During his recent visit to Brazil, Prince William met our 2025 Earthshot Prize finalists. He focused on connecting with local leaders from then Rio de Janeiro mayor Eduardo Paes. His journey was deeply rooted in promoting environmental stewardship. He was fully committed to championing positive initiatives such as the Earthshot Prize, United for Wildlife and events relating to COP30. The then-future King promised to fill his administration with people who cared about doing good.
During a stage appearance in Brazil, Prince William was asked to elaborate on his thoughts regarding recent changes within his family. The amendments mostly concern removing titles from his uncle, Andrew Mountbatten Windsor. Further compounding this, Prince Harry withdrew from public royal life in early 2020. For as long as he has, Prince William could have chosen to avoid airing out his family’s dirty laundry in public.
“Change will come from backing them, not by what I do.” – Prince William
He reiterated his appeal to join him in a collaborative enterprise with those who want to build a better world.
“I want to surround myself with people who want to make change and do good in the world.” – Prince William
In a poignant moment during his visit, Prince William toured the chapel located beneath Christ the Redeemer with Padre Omar Raposo. He landed next to the statue, where he was enthusiastically received by Cardinal Orani João Tempesta and Padre Omar. They were thrilled to show him around the holy ground. This section of his trip reflected Princess Diana’s tour from decades prior. It beautifully demonstrates the indelible legacy she left behind for her children.
“What an incredible trip this was,” added Prince William, as he looked back at the many emotional encounters that marked his visit to Brazil. He is a passionate environmental advocate committed to advancing sustainable development and green building practices. This deep commitment is a reflection of the values that Princess Diana impressed upon her children.
Prince William, meanwhile, is already stepping boldly into the shoes of a future monarch. Michael is committed to creating a world that is more just and equitable, both in the U.S. and abroad. Either way, he knows that true transformation can’t happen with a few folks acting in isolation, but only when everyone works together.
