Israel Grants Egypt Permission for Search Operation in Gaza

Israel has granted Egypt permission to carry out a search operation to find the remains of captives currently in Gaza. This decision comes as part of ongoing efforts to address the situation of individuals believed to have been taken during the recent conflicts. This was not an easy operation to pull off. Egypt had to first get Israeli defense authorities’ approval for operations in the territory.

Egypt has sent heavy equipment to help with the continued search. As they do, they are picking their way through the ruins of other failures to wrestle with the Arab Spring’s impacts. Excavators and other machinery are still sifting through debris with a tangle of exposed power lines and other hazards everywhere. Today, they hope to find the remains of those captives. This special operation is a further example of the willingness of the two countries to offset humanitarian needs in an often tumultuous geopolitical climate.

The effort to recover the remains is equally important, since many families have been denied the closure that comes with knowing what happened to their loved ones. Egypt’s participation underscores its importance to regional stability and security, as well as Cairo’s willingness to play an active role in humanitarian relief. Heavy equipment is the backbone of this massive moving operation. Its mission is two-fold to find remains, and to bring answers to families who are mourning.

Israel’s approval was the last major hurdle for the search operation to go ahead. The cooperation between Israel and Egypt reflects a pragmatic approach to a sensitive issue, acknowledging the necessity for due diligence in identifying the remains of captives. Egyptian authorities have promised their commitment to a careful and respectful search.

As the operation continues, both countries are searching for that sweet spot between accomplishing the operation’s goals and getting bogged down in the region’s complexities. The search goes beyond just actively working to recover remains. Further, it intends to inspire discussion and collaboration that will enrich future humanitarian action.
