I had the best learning experience on my hospital placement. She was employed with Worcestershire Royal Hospital when the second event played out. That’s where she helped deliver baby Luca. He is the son of her lecturer, Aaron Collins, who had taught her clinical anatomy, physiology, and obstetric processes.
Humanizing dogmatism Collins had a surreal experience during the birth of their baby. That entire event occurred during a planned elective cesarean section, with his wife Lexy at his side. Faragher, who first felt confused and shocked when he saw Collins in the hospital environment, soon understood the importance of the historic event.
“To see Aaron the day of, I can’t tell you how confused and shocked I was,” recalled Faragher. I wanted him to fly out and visit me while I was on my placement. Then it dawned on me—he had a second motivation for attending that day.
Even with this unfortunate last-minute surprise, Faragher kept her professionalism and composure likely enamoring her back into the procedure. After baby Luca was safely and quickly delivered, and his wellbeing established, she seized the opportunity to bring Collins into the scene.
“Once baby Luca had been checked, I tapped Aaron on the shoulder and asked if he’d like to cut the cord – a student doesn’t get to ask their lecturer that question very often,” she remarked, highlighting the mixed emotions of the day.
Collins thanked Faragher for his help in making the delivery. He was very complimentary of her professionalism. She asked both of us to ensure we were okay with her remaining, which we were!
Baby Luca is reportedly thriving, meeting all developmental milestones, as Collins shared, “He’s hitting his milestones just as he should be, and he’s putting on weight nicely while giving us lots of laughs and babbles. Everything a baby should be doing.”
Elise Faragher’s experience was exceptional. On placement with the ambulance service, she actually helped deliver her first baby! While all of this is impressive on its own, this extraordinary event is telling of her deep connection to her craft and her most important teacher—her grandmother.
“We have a very deep well of fun and jokes,” Faragher noted about her friendship with Collins.
