Indonesia’s Stance on Israeli Athletes Sparks International Response

This week Indonesia took it a step further by banning Israeli athletes from entering the country. This decision has generated a lot of interest, perhaps even more so after Indonesia was stripped of its hosting rights for football’s Under-20 World Cup in 2023. The Indonesian government has, both historically and presently, been very vocal in their support for Palestinian rights. This commitment was recently expressed by its senior minister of law, Yusril Ihza Mahendra, identity of this archipelagic country as the world’s most populous Muslim-majority nation.

The message from the Indonesian government could not be clearer. They refuse to grant visas to Israeli athletes who are to perform in the 53rd FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Championships on Jakarta from Oct. 19 to 25. Indonesia is preparing to host another youth World Cup later this year. Yet Israel has been unsuccessful in qualifying to this competition.

This decision has been communicated to FIG president Morinari Watanabe by Ita Yuliati, chairwoman of the Indonesian Gymnastics Federation. Indonesia’s case FIG’s statement is a long-overdue recognition of Indonesia’s status. They’re acutely aware of the host nation’s plight when it comes to putting on big international events.

“The FIG takes note of the Indonesian government’s decision not to issue visas to the Israeli delegation registered for the 53rd FIG Artistic Gymnastics, which will be held in Jakarta from 19-25 October, and recognizes the challenges that the host country has faced in organizing this event.” – Morinari Watanabe

In addition to its gymnastics commitments, Indonesia’s football landscape benefits from the close ties between Erick Thohir, a prominent Indonesian figure in sports, and FIFA president Gianni Infantino. With both Thohir and Infantino being members of the International Olympic Committee, the influence appears to be extensive within global sports governance.

Raja Sapta Oktohari, president of the Indonesian Olympic Committee, has welcomed the upholding of the government’s decision. He was quick to add that when such choices are made, it is after much consideration and weighing of factors.

“We respect every decision taken by the government with various considerations.” – Raja Sapta Oktohari

The FIG hopes for a future where all athletes can participate in competitions without fear, emphasizing the importance of safety and peace in sports.

“The FIG hopes that an environment will be created as soon as possible where athletes around the world can enjoy sports safely and with peace of mind.” – Morinari Watanabe

Indonesia is therefore under enormous pressure to honour its international commitments but maintain adherence to its national policy framework. At the same time, international sports organizations are taking action. The country very much believes in a Palestinian cause. Her bold declaration shines a light on the growing geopolitical intertwining in global athletics.
