Ceasefire Reached Amid Fighting in Aleppo Between Syrian Army and SDF

Fighting broke out in Aleppo, Syria. That conflict pitted the Syrian army and, by extension, Iran, against the US-backed Kurdish forces called the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF). According to anti-regime reports, the clashes led to one soldier’s death. After months of fierce fighting, a ceasefire deal was signed, providing shape reality for civilians in the war-torn region.

Tensions soured further between the Syrian army and the SDF, as fighting erupted between the two groups in what became a deadly scene. Their fraught relationship stoked the flames of war. The Syrian army has been laboring to recapture the land lost to now-embedded opposition fighters. At the same time, the SDF is focused on reinforcing its position in northern Syria. The most recent cycle of clashes highlights the fragility of Aleppo’s calm. Today, the city of Aleppo continues to be a major battleground within the Syrian civil war.

As reported in Syrian state media, the ceasefire was negotiated after five rounds of negotiations between regime and opposition negotiators were held. The goal of a cessation of hostilities is to provide civilians a brief respite from the madness. These men and women have endured decades of violence and disorder. The terms of that ceasefire have not been made public. Both sides are willing to work together in the short term and prevent more violence.

Aleppo may be at a turning point, but the ground is still very dangerous as either party weighs the battle. The death of this one soldier reminds us of the unavoidable human cost of these confrontations. It offers a chilling portent of what military involvement in that region could really mean.

International actors, watching closely given the experience of previous short-lived humanitarian ceasefires in Syria, continue to observe these developments with due caution. The multi-year agreement seeks to ensure a better, more predictable planning and funding environment. It aims to facilitate constructive conversations between warring parties.
