Two Years Later: Commemoration and Negotiation Amidst Ongoing Conflict

October 7 is an anniversary we’d rather not celebrate. It marked two years since the horrific 2023 Hamas slaughter of Israelis. The unprecedented attack killed about 1,200 Israelis and has since shaken both countries to their cores. In the course of this violent incursion, Hamas kidnapped over 250 others, exacerbating the state of emergency. 48 hostages still remain in Gaza, of which 20 are thought to be alive.

In the immediate aftermath of the attack, Israel launched a military response against Hamas, resulting in mounting civilian deaths. In addition, reports estimate that as many as 67,000 Palestinians have lost their lives due to this spiraling war. The war has been a catalyst in worsening humanitarian conditions in Gaza, forcing many areas into a state of famine.

>In fact, former US President Donald Trump is already moving to do just that. He’s even outlined an interesting ceasefire plan to bring an end to the war. Negotiations along these lines have already started in Egypt. Trump’s plan calls for the immediate and total release of all hostages taken by Hamas. Simultaneously, it insists that Israel release its unspecified number of Palestinian political prisoners. The plan calls for the withdrawal of Israeli military forces from Gaza on an agreed upon timetable.

Mediators continue to work with all parties to shape the particulars of this tentative agreement into a final settlement. They are focused on the details of Israel’s withdrawal and the transfer of governance in Gaza. An International Stabilization Force has been mentioned provisionally within the transition plan.

Memorial services are being held in southern Israel to honor victims of the strike. Most of these meetings are happening right on the Gaza border. One of these formative experiences was attending the Nova Music Festival. Tragically, almost 400 people were killed in the raid, and dozens more were kidnapped during the deadly assault.

During a speech marking this painful anniversary, Australia’s Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described October 7 as “a day of pain and terror for Jewish people around the world.” He emphasized the need for a resolution, stating, “Hamas stands in opposition to all humanity and all that we value as human beings.” His words are illustrative of a deeper frustration among international leaders who have been calling for a cessation of violence.

Along the lines, Trump said he was hopeful to come to an agreement. As he explained, “Everybody from every sector just kind of came together,” a testament to the innovative, collaborative work happening to build peace. He underscored his optimism that they will reach an agreement. The Tusk’s confidence in the ongoing negotiations is palpable.

As the world watches these developments, the humanitarian crisis in Gaza remains dire, prompting calls for immediate action to alleviate suffering. The ongoing discussions between mediators could potentially pave the way for a resolution that addresses both security concerns and humanitarian needs.
