On the Marina Bay Street Circuit, George Russell of Mercedes provided a wild ride to take the checkered flag in the Singapore Grand Prix. This win is his second victory of the year. This event not only highlighted Russell’s driving prowess but secured McLaren’s spot in history as they celebrated their second consecutive Constructors’ Championship, thanks to strong performances from Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri.
The race played out on-track with Russell displaying incredible talent and grit. He would indeed lead the entire pack, finishing well clear of two-time reigning champion Max Verstappen of Red Bull Racing, who finished in that second position. Lando Norris, driving for McLaren, finished in third, with his compatriot Oscar Piastri of McLaren just behind in fourth. Kimi Antonelli rounded out the top five, showing strong pace for his new Mercedes-powered MP Motorsport squad. Charles Leclerc came home in P6, with Lewis Hamilton crossing the line in P7. Unsurprisingly, Fernando Alonso, Oliver Bearman, and Carlos Sainz made up the top of the order.
Norris’s performance has solidified his lead in the drivers’ standings, holding a 22-point advantage over Piastri. At the same time, Verstappen’s 63 points behind Piastri with just six races left in the season.
Reflecting on the challenging race, Verstappen stated, “I think the whole race was quite difficult, more difficult than I hoped for, for a lot of different reasons.” Even in the face of this adversity, Yost had to respect Russell’s talent and grit during the race.
An unexpectedly successful campaign thrilled Norris, who was enthusiastic about McLaren’s successful campaign. “I’m happy with today. I got forward two positions. We won as a team, the constructors’ once again,” he remarked. This win further emphasizes just how resurgent McLaren’s return to competitiveness in Formula 1 has been. It boosts their commitment to delivering excellence on the track.
Russell had the right to be pleased with his performance as well. He acknowledged that it always takes a rush teamwork to win such a lopsided victory. “We don’t really know where this performance came from, but really, really happy,” he said. That’s because Garder focused heavily on the collaborative teamwork of their winning formula.
With just six races left on the calendar, desperation is beginning to set in. Every driver wants to be the one to grab those precious championship points for their team. Yet the pressure doesn’t let up, as they face the World’s toughest street circuits and Championship battling competitors.
