Global Activists Set Sail to Deliver Aid to Gaza from Tunisia

Activists from over 40 countries joined with local activists to initiate the maritime humanitarian mission. They begin their sail by Flotilla Global Sumud departing from the northern port city of Bizerte, Tunisia. Among those scheduled to participate is climate activist Greta Thunberg. The flotilla’s mission delivers critical food and humanitarian aid directly to the Palestinian people in Gaza. This move is based on a belief in the power of non-violence.

The convoy encountered unexpected logistical challenges that pushed its departure back. After 14 days, finally, its day came—departing from Barcelona’s harbor to its main destination—Gaza. Their flotilla, which includes two ships named Family and Alma, faced significant hurdles earlier this week. Both ships became casualties with major physical and psychological blows to the crew. The flagship, Family, was allegedly hit by a kamikaze drone while moored in Sidi Bou Said. At the same time, Alma was hit with an arson attack this past Tuesday night.

Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani expressed concern for the safety of the participants. This includes 58 Italians on board the flotilla, including four members of the Italian parliament. To this, he replied that Italy has already urged Israel to respect the rights of its citizens participating in the mission there. He put a big spotlight on this request.

“Our embassy in Tel Aviv, under my instruction, talked to the Israeli authorities about the respect of the rights for all the fellow citizens who are part of the flotilla, including among them several members of parliament,” – Antonio Tajani

Italy will extend all consular and diplomatic support to its nationals participating in this safeguard mission. This campaign highlights the international nature of the flotilla. Volunteers and activists have reiterated their commitment to a peaceful approach as they seek to establish a corridor for aid delivery.

Hassan Massoud, a representative of the flotilla, underscored the mission’s intent:

“The global flotilla has set sail from the port in Tunisia to the Gaza Strip, its main destination, without any scheduled stops, 14 days after its departure from Barcelona.” – Hassan Massoud

The flotilla was a real life expression of an extraordinarily diverse coalition of communities united in their commitment to humanitarianism. It features dozens of local elected officials and grassroots activists from all walks of life. The participants’ resolve becomes palpable as they make their way toward Gaza. They know that their efforts can do a great deal to blunt the terrible humanitarian crisis that millions in the region are experiencing.
