Ukrainian Immigrant Breaks World Record with Towering Sunflower

47-year-old Ukrainian immigrant Alex Babich is proving that miracles happen. In his sunny Hoosier backyard, he’s grown the tallest sunflower on record. Babich’s sunflower, lovingly dubbed “Clover,” reaches an astounding 35 feet (11 m) and 9 inches (22.9 cm). Incredible, this record giant surpasses the previous world record holder in Germany by an astounding 5 feet (1.5 meters)!

In an effort to love, protect and remember his homeland, Babich started growing sunflowers seven years ago after immigrating to the U.S. from Ukraine. His passion for these colorful flowers grew even more after Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022. The sunflower seeds symbolize his deep love for his home country. It remains an enduring monument to a community’s resilience and hope in the face of terrible darkness.

To measure Clover, Babich utilized a 40-foot cherry picker while on a WhatsApp call with a Guinness World Records representative. This moment marked a significant milestone for Babich, who reflected on his journey: “I’m going to die someday, but the stories of this flower will live on.” As he reflects on what legacy he is leaving with his gardening projects, his words hit home in a much deeper sense.

Babich’s path to this record-breaking sunflower was no walk in the park. He called the process a matter of “trial and error over decades.” His initial sunflower set a gigantic standard at 13 feet (4 meters) tall. With each successive new record achieved, he sent the bar higher, clearing 15 ft (4.5m) and then jumping to a whopping 19 ft (5.8m). The same dedication he poured into his craft has led to this remarkable accomplishment.

>The sunflower’s name, Clover, came from Babich’s 10-year-old son, who helped come up with the endearing alternate name. Whatever challenges Clover’s future may hold, Babich is confident that the story behind Clover will be treasured for generations. “My kids will be telling this story to the grandkids,” he said, emphasizing the enduring nature of their family’s connection to this remarkable flower.

Babich’s sunflower has turned heads well beyond the record books. A documentary named “Bloom,” chronicling his sunflower quest, is scheduled for release next summer. This documentary will focus mostly on Clover’s astonishing stature. It will include a look at the emotional and cultural importance that sunflowers have for Babich.

Reflecting on his success in growing giant sunflowers, Babich stated, “It’s as good as it gets for someone who grows giants.” His journey serves to inspire everyone to continue with their own journey. It’s a powerful reminder of what that perseverance and love can achieve in the face of adversity.
