Prince William Champions Mental Health Initiative in Wales

Prince William, the Prince of Wales, took a significant step towards mental health awareness during his recent visit to Cardiff. The royal was in the country to attend her first engagement at the Principality Stadium. Once there, he was greeted by Elizabeth Thomas-Evans, the dynamic CEO of the Jac Lewis Foundation. This visit launched a new national Suicide Safe Communities initiative for Wales. It also lined up beautifully with World Suicide Prevention Day.

Upon arrival, Prince William walked into the fumiga stadium alongside Thomas-Evans. They really took the time to have an honest discussion about the importance of mental health. Through a journey map, they illustrated the hurdles people encounter when looking for help. The Jac Lewis Foundation is a fierce advocate for this effort. It pays tribute to Jac Lewis, who sadly died by suicide.

On his visit, Prince William met with Jesse Lewis, Jac’s father. He visited teammates from Jac’s football team, Ammanford FC. These conversations underscored the need for community mental health support and how sports can be a critical part of mental health care.

… what you’re doing here is so important,” declared Prince William as he welcomed the rapt participants. As we’ve said before, “We need to unite around these issues to make sure no one in our communities feels isolated in their pain.”

Aside from all of the important dialogue that occurred around mental health, Prince William’s visit was focused on community building. He challenged members of the football team with a message on how building camaraderie can counter these strong feelings of isolation and despair. His work is indicative of a movement-wide commitment to creating healthy opportunities for families and communities. As a father himself to three children—Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis—he is particularly aware of the impact mental health can have on families.

In a light-hearted moment captured on social media, Prince William shared a photo of himself playfully wrestling with his children to commemorate Father’s Day. The photo struck a chord with millions, both illustrating a fatherhood that lifts up, inspires and protects the family structure.
