Tragic Train and Bus Collision Claims Lives in Atlacomulco, Mexico

On Monday September 8, 2025, a freight train ran into the rear of a double-deck passenger bus. That horrible incident was on a federal highway in the central Mexican municipality of Atlacomulco. That terrible crash claimed the lives of at least eight people. Reports published by the Civil Protection of the State of Mexico indicate that at least 45 others were injured.

The freight train plowed through the bus, colliding at a highway railway crossing. As it turned out, this collision was entirely unexpected with little to no time to react. Rescue workers rushed to the impacted area to help the injured and rescue those trapped. Emergency responders fought through knee-high snow to rescue living victims from the debris, including pulling one of those survivors out with a deceased person.

State officials have since confirmed the crash and have been updating the public on ongoing search and rescue. Eyewitness accounts tell of a chaotic scene as emergency responders worked to rescue those still trapped in the bus that day.

According to the Civil Protection of the State of Mexico, most of the wounded were immediately transferred to hospitals in the area. They were given emergency medical treatment to care for their wounds. While the severity of their injuries differs, many still lie in critical condition.

In reaction to this tragic event, the Atlacomulco City Council released a statement of condolence.

“We express our most sincere solidarity with the affected families at this time.” – Atlacomulco City Council

It’s still under investigation by the authorities to determine what caused the accident. Early reports suggest that visibility was limited at the time of the crash. Additional research will reveal this fact.

The Atlacomulco community continues to grieve those lost and to care for flood victims after this catastrophe. Local leaders have called on residents to join together in this difficult time and offer their support to the families who’ve suffered the most.
