Tragedy Strikes as Helicopter Crash Claims Three Lives in Shanklin

Just after noon on August 25, 2025, a worst case helicopter disaster descended upon Shanklin, Isle of Wight. The crash killed three, and one other person is still recovering and hospitalized with serious, life-threatening injuries. The helicopter had departed Sandown Airport at 9 a.m. local time for a flight school lesson. Soon after taking off, tragedy would strike as the flight of Northumbria Helicopters met with disaster.

The field where the crash occurred, which is near a road in the Shanklin community. Even after the helicopter crash, emergency services did not get notified until about 24 minutes later. Aerial camera footage confirmed that the G-OCLV model helicopter crashed to the ground almost completely destroyed on impact.

Inspectors from the UK’s Air Accidents Investigation Branch have been deployed to the scene. They’re collecting counter-evidence and digging into the circumstances of the crash. The purpose of this investigation is to piece together more of what transpired before this tragic crash.

Isle of Wight East Member of Parliament Joe Robertson shared his condolences, stating, “My heart goes out to the families of those who lost their lives in the helicopter crash outside Shanklin today. It is very sad and tragic news during what should have been a happy bank holiday helicopter flight from Sandown Airport.”
