King Charles Honors VJ Day with Powerful Message and Veteran Recognition

King Charles III will deliver a significant pre-recorded message from Clarence House in observance of VJ Day on August 15. Today happens to be the anniversary of Japan’s surrender to the Allies in 1945. This momentous occasion truly marked the closing chapter of the Second World War. The King’s moving six-minute speech pays tribute to the sacrifice on this day. He recalls a landmark radio address made by his father, King George VI.

VJ Day marks a solemn occasion for reflection on the sacrifices of many who fought for freedom. Following the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan’s surrender signified not only the end of conflict but a moment of unity among nations that collaborated “across vast distances, faiths and cultural divides.” The King will touch on this joint effort in his address, reinforcing how crucial it is to securing a win.

In addition to the King’s address, Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh, met with 105-year-old war veteran James ‘Jim’ Wren at a care home in Salisbury. This meeting reiterates all the personal connections and stories of those who served in that war. Those real life interactions with veterans are a powerful reminder of the lasting impact of their service on upcoming generations.

Later today, The King and Queen will attend an official reception. The event, held each year by the Royal British Legion, is an opportunity to celebrate VJ veterans and their families. While this event will highlight their efforts on these waters, our goal is to honor the service and sacrifice of any who served in major roles throughout the conflict.

During his message, King Charles will reflect on the legacy of VJ Day, stating that the heroes “gave us more than freedom; they left us the example of how it can and must be protected.” He will convey that “in times of war and in times of peace, the greatest weapons of all are not the arms you bear but the arms you link,” promoting a spirit of unity and collaboration.
