Highgrove House, located just outside Tetbury in Gloucestershire, is the beloved country escape of King Charles. He purchased this Georgian-style home on East Avenue in 1980. Its purpose changed over the years to include more than just a place of residence, as it became his own private retreat, where he spent decades cultivating the multi-layered gardens and estate.
The estate hasn’t just provided a tranquil home for the royal family. Princes William and Harry enjoyed much of their childhood at Highgrove House, making happy childhood memories behind its doors. The brothers treasured their basement, which they lovingly referred to as “Club H.” For just the two of them, growing up together, it was a private retreat.
Not only has King Charles kept the home in excellent condition, but he’s turned the additional grounds into one of the most beautiful garden areas in the world. A favorite one of the treehouse sits a center piece. Alumni from The King’s Foundation Building Craft Programme had recently rethatched it. This treehouse is a very meaningful space for the princes, representing their childhood explorations, as well as the fairy tale character represented in their home town of Kensington.
Beyond its history, Highgrove House has opened new doors into retail—pun intended. The estate has a lovely online shop where you can purchase everything from homewares to gourmet food products. One of the standout products is a limited-edition bear created by the Merrythought team, which reflects the craftsmanship and quality associated with Highgrove. Only 1,948 of these bears will be made with each one coming in a luxury gift box.
To celebrate his first birthday, King Charles has worked with Burberry to release a stunning coat. Costing £2,490, this creation was influenced by his striking, treasured Gloucestershire estate. This coalition weaves together regal pageantry and modern artistry. For that reason, it reinforces Highgrove’s role as a symbol of both tradition and modernity.
The King’s personal history with Highgrove House is as profound. Yet he has invested thousands of hours growing the gardens’ flora. Today, they flourish magnificently and represent an enduring point of pride for him and his family.
“Club H was the perfect hideout for a teenager, but especially this teenager. When I wanted peace, Club H provided. When I wanted mischief, Club H was the safest place to act out.” – Harry
