RFK Jr. Addresses CDC Shooting and Vaccine Misinformation

As many readers likely know, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has been an even more vocal opponent of vaccine safety and other public health efforts. After a confrontational recent shooting spree at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) headquarters, he has become the face of the fight against health disinformation. The horrific shooting ended the career and life of DeKalb County Police Officer David Rose. In reaction, a union that represents CDC employees is calling on the Trump administration to publicly reject the vaccine-related disinformation campaign.

Patrick Joseph White, the alleged shooter in this incident, had reportedly been blaming his health problems on the COVID-19 vaccine. This growing crisis further demonstrates the perilous consequences of allowing falsehood to flourish. Kennedy has considered himself a medical skeptic for a long time. It’s not just vaccines. He doesn’t stop at questioning the safety and efficacy of vaccines. And yet his remarks on these topics have left public health professionals horrified. They’re taking to the streets, but these dreamers are mobilizing to counter the misinformation he spreads.

Kennedy expressed his condolences to the loved ones of Officer Rose, stating, “No one should face violence while working to protect the health of others.” He emphasized the dedication of public health workers, noting that they “show up every day with purpose — even in moments of grief and uncertainty.” His comments are indicative of serious commitment to the frontline public health workforce. While he’s encouraged by the progress, he’s aware of the hostile environment created by misinformation and disinformation.

Andrew Nixon, a speaking member of the American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) Local 2883 reinforced Kennedy’s message. He affirmed that the organization remains “fully committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of CDC employees.” Nixon further criticized the exploitation of tragedies for political gain, reinforcing the need for solidarity with public health workers during these challenging times.

Public health experts are still concerned by Kennedy’s prominent reach — especially regarding his anti-vaccine agenda. His capacity to wage an anti-science disinformation campaign against other health harms has many experts and policy advocates on edge. The AFGE Local 2883 highlighted this risk, noting that “their leadership is critical in reinforcing public trust and ensuring that accurate, science-based information prevails.”

In a reaction to these recent rulings, scientists and public health advocates are more rapidly stepping up to address vaccine misinformation. The CDC shooting incident serves as a stark reminder of the potential consequences that can arise from unfounded claims about vaccine safety.

Though the controversial topic furthers at this year’s event, Kennedy has long been a strong proponent of questioning vaccine protocols. At the same time, the violence against health workers makes discussing public health and safety more broadly all the more urgent.
