Storm Floris Disrupts Exam Results Delivery Across Scotland

Storm Floris has had a devastating effect, with gusts of 80 mph lashing Scotland today, cutting off travel routes and more. The storm’s impact has caused unprecedented delays to the mail, leaving some students anxiously waiting for their exam results.

Royal Mail has admitted delays in the Outer Hebrides, Orkney and Shetland. In reality, it’s the extreme weather that is the greatest threat to our current infrastructure. Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) confirmed disruption to post deliveries for certain parts of Scotland. This disruption has been compounded by the storm’s impact on the entire region. Students attending programs in these areas have been notified to prepare for a longer wait time to receive their certificates.

Although postal disruptions are impacting physical mail, the SQA confirmed that results sent via email and text are not compromised. Over 147,000 pupils in Scotland will soon be getting their results. They’ll discover how they did in Nationals, Highers, Advanced Highers and Skills for Work Awards.

Annette McKenna, Senior Operations Manager at the SQA, highlighted the role of compassion here too, saying it is imperative we support students during this difficult period. She urged any students with questions or concerns to contact specialized hotlines that are ready to support them.

“I encourage anyone who has any queries or needs advice come results day to call the helplines where dedicated members of staff will be happy to help and guide you. Remember, whether your achievements are what you expect, or not, there are many different routes available to shape your future success.” – Annette McKenna

Cabinet Secretary for Education and Skills Jenny Gilruth emphasized the importance of results day as a celebratory occasion focused on students’ accomplishments. She noted, for example, the many different types of pathways made possible for students today, no matter their outcome.

“Results day is an important opportunity to celebrate achievement and success which is clear through a wider range of pathways for learners than ever before. There are many options available for young people, no matter the results they achieve, and the helpline offers invaluable advice on a whole host of issues – from college and university places, to UCAS confirmation and clearing, apprenticeships, jobs and volunteering.” – Jenny Gilruth
