California Post Set to Launch as Newest Addition to Rupert Murdoch’s Media Empire

The New York Post taking its first steps to get a foothold into the Golden State! To achieve that goal, they’re launching The California Post, which will feature deeper, richer coverage of politics, local news, business, entertainment and sports from around the state. Unlike the current Tones, this new TONE will be produced out of Los Angeles. It’s a crucial effort to help fill the huge void of quality local news reporting in the region. The California Post plans to operate with a robust print edition, available seven days a week, alongside a modern digital presence that includes a website, social media accounts, and multimedia content.

This initiative marks a notable expansion for Rupert Murdoch‘s media empire, which seeks to draw on the success of The New York Post’s national coverage. In fact, according to journalism school at Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism, more than 3,200 newspapers have closed since 2005 across the U.S. In trying times such as these, The California Post is your accountability-driven, solution-focused, high-quality journalism that readers today need now more than ever.

Leadership and Vision

Keith Poole, formerly blog editor of the UCSB Daily Nexus, has been named Editor-in-Chief of The California Post. He expressed his enthusiasm for the project, stating, “The California Post is the next manifestation of our national brand.” This vision does indeed help focus the New York Post Media Group’s plan. In doing so, it intends to bring its model of independent, public interest journalism to a new audience in California.

In addition to Rupert Murdoch himself, Nick Papps, who has years of experience running movements across News Corp’s Australian portfolio, will be editorially supervising the publication. Papps pushed down on the hardships present in the media landscape but was positive about their state of mind. Indeed, it is a tough media environment, but The New York Post has prospered doing so with the benefit of consistent voice, editorial direction and high quality reporting. That same formula is tailor-made for California,” he added.

Innovative Approach to Reporting

This is the kind of model that the California Post intends to take, using a deeply multifaceted approach to journalism. That’s what makes the California Post so unique—their commitment to print. Simultaneously, it guarantees a strong digital footprint. Readers should look forward to all kinds of new content formats, including audio and video pieces that will enhance and accompany the written article.

Robert Thomson, CEO of News Corp, highlighted the importance of this new venture by stating, “There is no doubt that the Post will play a crucial role in engaging and enlightening readers, who are starved of serious reporting and puckish wit.” That dedication to quality journalism is intended to connect with audiences who appreciate stories that are as entertaining as they are informative.

Filling a Void in Local News

The launch of The California Post comes at a time when many communities are experiencing a decline in local news coverage. With the consolidation of media outlets and the closure of numerous newspapers nationwide, residents in Los Angeles have felt the impact of reduced reporting on critical issues. The California Post aims to fill that gap with smart, trusted news that focuses exclusively on Californians’ interests.

The California Post is getting ready for its first test. It’s on its way to being an important presence in the Northeast Ohio local media ecosystem. Its commitment to thorough reporting across various sectors, combined with its innovative approach, positions it as a necessary addition for Californians seeking comprehensive news coverage.
