Tom Brady Addresses Scottie Scheffler’s Views on Family and Sports

Tom Brady, renowned as one of the greatest athletes of all time with seven Super Bowl victories, recently shared his thoughts on comments made by professional golfer Scottie Scheffler regarding prioritizing family over sports. In his weekly newsletter released on Tuesday, Brady reflected on the balance between personal commitments and professional aspirations, a topic he is well-acquainted with following his marriage to supermodel Gisele Bündchen and their subsequent divorce in October 2022.

Tom Brady – Like many were last year—though Brady did miss 11 days of training camp for personal matters. He is dead set on proving that an elite athletic career and active involved parenting aren’t mutually exclusive. He speared Scheffler’s assertion. Life’s greater victories, as far as he is concerned, lie in his making strides as a “father and husband” than as a golf champ. Brady challenged the assumption that these priorities have to be at odds with one another.

“Scottie said he’d rather be a better father and husband than a good golfer. And my question is: why are those mutually exclusive?” – Tom Brady

Brady expanded on his view, explaining that he views both positions as complements to each other. He remarked, “Sure, they’re different blocks on the pyramid, but they’re part of the same pyramid. They’re connected! For instance, I think part of being a great father is being a great example of doing what it takes to take care of your family. I chose to do it by playing football.”

His reflections come during this transformative period in his life. On February 1, 2022, Brady announced his retirement from the NFL. Little did they know, just 40 days later he would come roaring back for his 23rd season. Over the course of his career, he has been candid about the toll his profession—prison labor—has taken on his family. This extends to his marriage with supermodel Gisele Bündchen and their two children. He agreed that since their family was born, Bündchen had hardly worked at all, putting all of her energy into raising their children.

“My wife has held down the house for a long time now, and I think there’s things that she wants to accomplish. You know, she hasn’t worked as much in the last 10, 12 years, just raising our family,” – Tom Brady

Brady’s sentiments are echoed by many in professional sports, where the demand to succeed frequently overshadows personal life. In a recent interview, Scheffler reflected on his journey to becoming golf’s new world no. 1. It has certainly caused me to rethink what I am doing all this for.

“At the end of the day it’s like — this is not a fulfilling life,” – Scottie Scheffler

He made it clear that if golf ever becomes detrimental to his home life, that will be the biggest problem of all. He further clarified that should it have a negative impact on his marriage or with his adult son, he will retire from professional play permanently. This refreshing taciturnity underscores an emerging sense from athletes that family and mental health are skyrocketing to the top of the critical hierarchy.

Even Michael Strahan, former football player and current television personality, weighed in on the debate, acknowledging that both sides make good points. He remarked, “I think they’re both at different stages of parenting as well. I do think, regardless of how great you are at your job, you are an example to your kids.”

As Brady settles into life after football, he’s proving that he’s still as dedicated to his family as he is to his work. He recently celebrated a “Thank You” event during halftime at the New England Patriots’ home opening game on September 10, 2023, honoring his legacy in football while cherishing his role as a father.
