Kirklees Council has given the go-ahead for plans for a new purpose-built school specifically to help autistic children aged five to 19 years old. This facility, which will accommodate up to 180 pupils, aims to provide a tailored environment that fosters their educational and social development.
The council emphasizes that the new school is localized, allowing easier access to specialized education. This announcement will be a huge win for families across the region. The multi-pronged project would like to see Joseph Norton Academy rebuilt. Her institution is focused on truly bringing the best to their students who have social, emotional, and mental health needs.
Redevelopment of the site began in May as they prepare for construction now. Councillor Jane Rylah, the cabinet member for education, called this “the most important project” that she’s worked on. She stressed that gaining planning permission is the biggest step forward for the project. This project seeks to facilitate the educational advancement of Autism spectrum children.

The new facility has transformed the academic ecosystem and addressed an urgent need for unique, specialized educational environments. It shows off Kirklees Council’s impressive ambition to best serve a wide range of learning needs throughout the community.
Councillor Rylah expressed her enthusiasm regarding the positive impact this investment will have on families across Kirklees, stating, “I’m looking forward to seeing the build progress and the positive impact this investment will bring to families across Kirklees.”
The Woodley School—renowned nationally for providing exceptional educational opportunities and vital therapeutic supports—will be the heart and hub of this exciting new initiative. Councillor Rylah added that the new purpose built facility will help them grow and increase their programs. By expanding their reach, this expansion will benefit many more children and young people who face challenges that require specialized support.
