Manchester United is set to announce one of the biggest transfers in the club’s history. They’ve now officially signed Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford for a fee starting at $87 million. The 24-year-old wide man from Cameroon is set to have his medical today. This will now enable him to join the rest of the team when they travel to the United States for their pre-season tour on Tuesday.
Mbeumo’s signing is the most important piece of manager Ruben Amorim’s plan to overhaul Manchester United’s wretched attack. The wingers’ most impressive quality is their versatility. He can find success in a variety of roles, be it on the flanks or in central attacking positions. Amorim will have to evolve to overcome the flaws displayed last season. He has to be their answer too, after Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee failed on primary striker duties.
During his six years at Brentford Mbeumo flourished. He netted 70 goals as well as providing 51 assists in 242 appearances in all competitions. He transferred to Brentford from French club Troyes in 2019. Last season, he announced himself to the world by scoring 20 goals in 38 Premier League games. His jaw-dropping displays have undoubtedly affected Amorim’s call-up to beef up the group with his arrival.
Their rivals Manchester United were in prime position to snatch that spot which would have seen them earn around £70 million ($94.11 million) more by not qualifying for the Champions League. Even so, they’re working hard to recruit new talent. The club broke their transfer record in January with the £62.5 million ($84.03 million) purchase of Matheus Cunha. Now they’re equally as thrilled to expand the list with Mbeumo.
The upcoming medical will be the last test before Mbeumo is signed and sealed to Manchester United. Whatever happens with him, his inclusion in that squad will lift the team’s attacking options up in the air. Perhaps of equal importance, it would help jumpstart a sputtering attack once again having trouble getting on the scoreboard.
