Free Breakfast Initiative Boosts Attendance at Burton Green Primary School

Burton Green Primary School has experienced a stunning increase in student turnout. This tangible improvement is due to their vigorous involvement with the council-managed Hungry Minds program. The school became a part of the initiative last year and has provided over 50,000 free meals to their students since. The scheme is targeted at families who fall outside the basic set of eligibility criteria for the national free school meal provision. It delivers key investments directly to communities that need them most.

Head teacher Ash McGann praised the positive effect of the breakfast club on the climate of the school. With attendance rates rising to 95.5% in 2025, up from 93% the previous year, the scheme has undeniably contributed to a more conducive learning atmosphere. About 50 children from Reception to Year Six regularly attend the breakfast club, which offers a variety of nutritious options to get their day started.

Councillor Bob Webb emphasized the importance of the Hungry Minds Appeal, stating that it seeks to fill gaps for families who may not have access to government support. Local businesses and community members invest money to fund this great experiment. They share a deep commitment to the ideal that no child should ever have to go hungry.

Ash McGann shared her enthusiasm for the continued success of the breakfast club. She stated, “Now, no child in this school should go hungry because they have a full, nutritious breakfast.” McGann joined the program in-depth to discuss its profound influence on different areas of school life. He pointed out that it brought about a marked decrease in student behaviors. “It’s really improved behaviour, because children have that soft start to the day, so they’re not immediately in with the learning,” she added.

The breakfast club not only provides meals but serves as a time for students to socialize before classes begin. Seven-year-old Seb, an enthusiastic returner, summed up what makes the experience so special. Because we can eat a second breakfast, we can increase our energy intake. It makes me focus on the class questions more,” he admitted. He talked about how a healthy breakfast helps him learn better.

This week, the Hungry Minds scheme marked a beautiful milestone. With 50,000 free meals served, it’s been a great first year at Burton Green Primary School. The school was really looking forward to starting its second year of the breakfast club initiative. It’s a challenging moment, but both staff and students wanted it to succeed deeply, and it’s providing critical support to the community.
