The new medical drama Doctor Odyssey has formally been canceled after only one season. Its journey, both on and off-screen, was stormy. The new limited series has starred Joshua Jackson and aired its season finale on May 15th. Though it provided a satisfactory conclusion for its protagonists, she sad to say, it did not get renewed.
Set aboard a cruise ship, Doctor Odyssey followed the lives of a dedicated medical staff navigating challenges both personal and professional. The show featured Jackson alongside Phillipa Soo and Sean Teale, whose characters grappled with complex relationships, including a potential throuple involving Soo’s character, Avery, and Teale’s character, Tristan.
Created by Ryan Murphy, known for his innovative storytelling, Doctor Odyssey attempted to blend medical drama with the high-seas adventure. The series encountered incredible challenges while on air. Viewers witnessed the characters endure life-threatening events, such as a devastating tsunami wave followed by earthquake aftershocks, yet the show’s real-life challenges proved even more daunting.
The cancellation comes in the wake of credible sexual harassment allegations leveled against Tyler Patton. He had been working as the assistant prop master under Tammie Patton, the show’s set property master. Caroline Mack, Alicia Haverland, and Ava Steinbrenner have accused Tyler Patton of conducting an “unchecked campaign of sexual harassment for months.” The suit claims that he and other male props employees created “an unlawful den of sexual harassment and retaliation,” with Tammie Patton allegedly ignoring the complaints and retaliating against the accusers.
The accusations have cast a dark shadow over the production. This new wave of scrutiny is instead directed at the workplace culture behind the creation of Doctor Odyssey. Even with all of this drama, the season finale provided a fitting sense of closure to its four leads. Fans were at least able to bid farewell to the series with a sense of closure.
