Prince William has announced that the next Earthshot Prize Awards will take place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Save the date for November 5, 2025! This free annual event focuses on finding new and creative solutions to our biggest environmental challenges. Its aim is to promote national action around the world to “heal” the planet. The awards ceremony is just one small step in a much larger effort that will last until 2030.
Prince William, The Duke of Cambridge, launched The Earthshot Prize in October 2020. It looked to former U.S. President John F. Kennedy’s bold Moonshot initiative for guidance. To date, the awards have visited a number of dynamic, creative cities around the world. They have previously taken place in Cape Town in 2024, Singapore in 2023, Boston in 2022, and London’s Alexandra Palace in 2021.
At a recent panel discussion during the Leading with Impact event at Bloomberg, Prince William expressed his excitement about the upcoming ceremony in Brazil. In his remarks, he emphasized the timely relevance of this convening. It hopes to “supercharge” the climate and nature efforts of its finalists, but shine a light on Brazil’s leadership in these areas.
The Earthshot Prize Awards includes five distinct categories: Protect and restore nature, Clean our air, Revive our oceans, Build a waste-free world, and Fix our climate. Each of these winners receives a grant of £1 million to jump start their environmental efforts.
“The Museum of Tomorrow is the perfect home for The Earthshot Prize and our mission of urgency and optimism for the planet,” said Jason Knauf, Chief Executive Officer of The Earthshot Prize. The venue explicitly highlights the ceremony’s dedication to celebrating creative, new solutions to transcendental challenges that affect the environment all over the globe.
Prince William has long been keen to make a visit to South America. He’s especially inspired by Brazil’s incredible environments and the Brazilian people’s strong love for the Earth.
“From a personal point of view, I’ve always wanted to get to South America, particularly Brazil. So I’m personally very excited about going down there. I think South America as a whole, the amount of ecosystem, kind of environmental interest and passion that is there.” – Prince William
He continued that the energy and excitement of Brazilian culture was a natural fit with the awards’ goals.
“I think that’s really important. And I think they epitomise the approach to what we can be doing more sustainably. The vibrancy, the energy, the enthusiasm. I think the awards will be spectacular.” – Prince William
The Earthshot Prize Awards are meant to inspire greater engagement in sustainability work as a whole. The clock is ticking on this year’s ceremony—don’t miss out! As a result, HRH Prince William is calling upon more people and institutions to join him on this crucial environmental effort.
