Sunny Hostin Recovers from Allergic Reaction on The View

Sunny Hostin, a co-host on ABC’s The View, had a very scary allergic reaction while on-air last month in December. Particularly Hostin, who alongside co-hosts Joy Behar and Alyssa Farah Griffin experienced a freak medical emergency. This was especially true after they tasted some typical Greek cuisine that Debbie Matenopoulos had brought to the taping.

The allergic reaction went down after Hostin ate a salad with an ingredient that she’s allergic to. Even with the impactful nature of what was happening, Hostin was able to keep her cool. She pleaded with Behar to join her in making their co-hosts aware of what had taken place. Once she understood the seriousness of her diagnosis, Hostin shared her experience with Sara Haines, Griffin, and Ana Navarro.

Hostin went on to thank Matenopoulos for her approach to the situation, admitting that she “had to be great in the moment. The on-site medical team quickly responded to Hostin’s needs, keeping her safe, calm, and supported during her scary allergic reaction.

In the center of the crazy, Hostin gave us one smile-inducing moment. She even wrote a mock “death note” to Griffin, jokingly detailing her fears of the food killing her. On the episode, Griffin questioned Hostin if there were walnuts in the fried rice. Turns out that the walnuts had caused her allergic reaction.

Reflecting on the incident, Hostin remarked, “What was great was our Disney nurses are like superheroes,” highlighting the professionalism and promptness of the medical team on hand.

As the culinary maven of ABC’s ‘The View’, since 2016, Hostin has taken part in plenty of cooking segments, honoring her Caribbean-American roots. This new experience reminds me of one of the little understood realities of live television — it’s totally unpredictable. It provides great insight on the critical need to understand food allergies.

Griffin and other co-hosts said they were happy Hostin survived this trauma. They expressed their frustration through the episode and were grateful to the quick actions of medical staff.
