Impact of Listeria Outbreak
Listeria monocytogenes is a pathogenic bacterium that can cause serious invasive infections in vulnerable populations. Pregnant people are especially at risk as Listeria can cause miscarriage, stillbirth, or severe illness in newborns. Older adults and people who are immunocompromised are at increased risk of severe disease.
As the CDC has warned, the risk to the public from this outbreak is greater than currently known. Most people with mild to moderate disease recover without clinical testing, so their cases remain untested. There may be delays in reporting recent illnesses since it typically takes three to four weeks to determine if a sick person is part of an outbreak.
“The true number of sick people in this outbreak is likely higher than the number reported.” – CDC
