Culinary Icon Anne Burrell Passes Away at 55

Anne Burrell, the well-known culinary artist, dies at age 55. She was the original long-time co-host of Food Network’s “Worst Cooks in America.” Burrell, who was as famous for her fiery temperament as for her culinary skills, died Oct. 29, 2023. She was born on September 21, 1969 in Cazenovia, New York. Her love of the culinary arts was inspired by her mother’s delicious home-cooked meals and the inspiration of the great Julia Child.

Burrell graduated from Canisius College in Buffalo, New York with a double degree in English and Communications. From there, she followed her culinary dreams full throttle. She graduated from the Culinary Institute of America in 1996. After that, she tuned her craft in Italy at the Italian Culinary Institute for Foreigners. Her time in Italy sparked her love for authentic Italian cooking. After that, she continued to perfect her craft by working apprenticeships around the country and the world.

Burrell honed her celebrated career as a sous chef at Felidia — an acclaimed Manhattan restaurant. There, she blossomed, thanks in part to the mentorship of Lidia Bastianich. She went on to be the executive chef at Savoy in SoHo. There, she achieved international acclaim for her Mediterranean-inspired cooking with a strong focus on an open wood fire.

Burrell’s impact extended beyond the kitchen. She wrote two cookbooks. Of those, one, Cook Like a Rock Star, debuted as a New York Times bestseller and served as an introduction to her culinary philosophy and food-as-culture passion. Her fiery personality on screen endeared her to passionate Food Network fans and cooks-in-training across the country.

Known for her colorful personality as much as for her culinary accomplishments, Burrell was a beloved member of the family. Her husband, Stuart Claxton, whom she married in October 2021, survives her. She is survived by her step-son, Javier. Her family described her as “a beloved wife, sister, daughter, stepmother, and friend.”

Family representatives shared their sentiments about Burrell, noting, “Her smile lit up every room she entered.” They emphasized that “Anne’s light radiated far beyond those she knew, touching millions across the world. Though she is no longer with us, her warmth, spirit, and boundless love remain eternal.”

>The Food Network paid tribute to Burrell’s legacy, stating, “Anne was a remarkable person and culinary talent — teaching, competing and always sharing the importance of food in her life and the joy that a delicious meal can bring.”
