Beaconside C of E Primary School to Expand with New Classrooms

Beaconside C of E Primary School in Hutton Hill, Penrith, Cumbria. It recently won federal approval for a big expansion project! The satellite school’s intention is to build five new classrooms primarily focused on meeting the needs of Key Stage 1 and 2 pupils. This new development will see 119 new school places created. Plus, it smartly meets soaring demand for school space across the region.

This excellent decision is the product of a community team effort to “futureproof Penrith” with adequate school places for our booming population. Funding for this new development will be covered by a specific stipulation agreement, illustrating a careful investment in community schooling.

Amy Holliman, a representative from Westmorland and Furness Council, underlined the need to make the new school places available incrementally. This requires a longer multi-year process. This simple phased approach guarantees a seamless transition for all students and staff members. Even better, it funds them upfront, before the new facilities come online.

As exciting as this expansion is, community concerns have already begun to emerge. Residents have repeatedly challenged the necessity of providing such a large number of staff car parking spaces. They worry that the facilities will not be adequate with the influx of new students. Neighbors are worried about having increased traffic during peak drop-off and pick-up hours. This increase could jeopardize the safety of local roads and could make congestion worse.

The school incorporates green infrastructure features, including the extensive use of sloping roofs. I’m sure whatever new classrooms are built, they’ll be done to fit in seamlessly with these historic structures. Whilst many cycles of extensions and new builds approval later, their approval represents a tremendous victory in Educating Penrith’s trajectory towards advancing educational resources.
