Robertson Family Reflects on Phil’s Alzheimer’s Diagnosis During Duck Dynasty: The Revival Premiere

The Robertson family shared heartfelt reflections on Phil Robertson’s Alzheimer’s diagnosis during the premiere episode of “Duck Dynasty: The Revival,” which aired on June 1. Phil Robertson, the patriarch of the Duck Dynasty/Duck Commander empire, died from cancer on May 25 at age 79. His family opened up about their challenges following his swift early-onset diagnosis in December 2023. This now involves his child, Willie Robertson, and his wife, Korie.

Phil Robertson was as colorful as a television character as he was as a business tycoon. He started Duck Commander, a multimillion-dollar enterprise that produces hunting apparel and equipment. Under his leadership, Duck Commander grew into a huntin’ empire, complete with a book publisher, television production company and podcast studio. Willie Davidson Robertson took the helm in 2002. All the while, Willie was running the day-to-day operations, and Phil had taken on the formal role of president, further shepherding the brand’s expansion.

Ahead of the show’s New York premiere, Tasha, considered the backbone of the family, reflected with them on Phil’s health crisis and its profound emotional impact on their family. Korie Robertson candidly expressed the family’s concerns, stating, “So recently, Willie’s dad was diagnosed with early Alzheimer’s, and it’s been a struggle for all of us.” She emphasized the impact on Willie, noting, “He wouldn’t want to admit it, but I definitely think it’s affected Willie, and I think it’s made him think really hard about his own legacy.”

Willie announced that he is “fully semi-retiring” as CEO of Duck Commander, signaling a shift in leadership while honoring his father’s legacy.

Korie acknowledged the difficulty of expressing emotions within the family dynamic, saying, “I know it’s not very Robertson to talk about your feelings, but you could talk about your feelings. I’m proud of you, babe.” She highlighted Willie’s hard work over the years and encouraged him to reflect on their family’s journey.

Even in the wake of personal tragedy, the Robertsons have proven that as a family, they are unstoppable. Willie and Korie are half of a large family that includes their six children—Rebecca, John Luke, Sadie, Bella, Will and Rowdy. They share the delight of eight grandchildren! The extended family includes Willie’s three brothers and their spouses.

The premiere of “Duck Dynasty: The Revival” marks a new chapter for the Robertson family as they navigate life after Phil’s passing. The show’s return aims to maintain the heart of the original series while addressing real-life issues that resonate with viewers.

Willie humorously commented during the episode about dealing with emotions in their unique way: “God, those are the strongest onions. They’re burning the crap out of my eyes. You don’t smell them?” Yet, this light-hearted moment countered the serious tenor of all the conversations relating to Phil’s health and legacy.
