United Airlines Extends Domestic Check-In Time to 45 Minutes Before Departure

United Airlines has changed its domestic check-in policy. Now, travelers need to arrive 45 minutes prior to their departure to ensure proper check-in. Beginning June 3, that need not be the case. Now all passengers have had to follow the 30-minute rule—whether they’ve checked a bag or not.

The Chicago-based airline says the new policy is intended “to improve the overall experience for customers.” By aligning the check-in time with the existing checked baggage deadline, United seeks to promote greater consistency for its customers. The airline’s spokesperson noted,

“The change brings greater consistency for our customers by aligning with our current checked baggage deadline and the check-in policies followed by most other airlines.” – United Airlines

This updated policy now applies to all domestic flights, so travelers will need to allow extra time to make sure they don’t miss their flight. In a statement, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) suggested that travelers contact United Airlines for more details about check-in times. Keep in mind that these times may vary based on when you’re traveling!

If travelers don’t adapt to this new check-in cut-off, they’ll end up stuck. If not, they could be left behind at the gate or have their travel plans otherwise disrupted. According to United Airlines,

“However, we have the right to deny service which may result in cancellation of your reservation, denied boarding or the option to check your bags.” – United Airlines

United Airlines… not just taking a good step, but as it continues to navigate policy-making in the wake of the pandemic. This decision exemplifies a larger trend across the industry to improve operational efficiency and increase customer experience. Airport travelers are advised to get to the terminal sooner than usual to allow extra time as they go through security screening and other check-in processes.
