Billy Joel, the legendary singer-songwriter, was forced to cancel his remaining concert dates after being diagnosed with normal pressure hydrocephalus. He outed himself via an unusually public statement released on his Instagram account. In it, he thanked from the bottom of his heart his fans for their encouragement and support in this trying period. Joel, who is receiving treatment at this time, said he had to learn to put his health above everything else.
Normal pressure hydrocephalus is an abnormal accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid within the brain’s ventricles. This condition can lead excess pressure throughout the body. In the long term, it can result in devastating complications such as loss of mobility, bladder dysfunction, and dementia. Joel’s diagnosis comes from recently flaring symptoms after a series of bad show performances on the road. These complications have taken a toll on his hearing, sight and equilibrium.
To treat this debilitating condition, Joel had to have a major operation, something that is frequently required in the treatment of hydrocephalus. One typical surgical procedure includes placing a shunt in the brain to help drain some of that extra fluid. The other alternative treatment is endoscopic third ventriculostomy (ETV), whereby an opening is made within the brain to improve flow of the cerebral fluid. In addition to these surgical procedures, Joel faces a rigorous course of physical therapy as prescribed by his doctors.
Joel’s next stadium show—rumored to be his last ever, though we’ll see—would the November 9, 2024 show at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas. Yet, this very diagnosis has outcasted the event. All concert dates have been postponed, with an expected return to touring on July 5, 2025 in Pittsburgh.
In his Instagram statement, Joel conveyed his disappointment about the cancellations:
“I’m sincerely sorry to disappoint our audience, and thank you for understanding.” – Billy Joel
