Princess Charlotte’s Sporting Spirit Shines Through Family Ties

Charlotte, the ten-year-old daughter of the Prince and Princess of Wales, is stealing the show. Her increasing love for athletes is the talk of the town! At the recent storytelling gala that he and the Duchess of Cambridge attended, Prince William revealed the impressive stories behind his daughter’s emerging athletic pursuits. He shared that she’s an accomplished long distance runner and rugby netballer. This surprising announcement further highlights the British royal family’s deep ties to the sporting world.

At an event, attended by our FAST Ambassador and Olympic middle-distance runner Keely Hodgkinson, Prince William went on to explain the sporting pursuits of Princess Charlotte. He said she had temporarily moved to training for the 400-meter and hurdles. In a serious turn, album proceeds will go toward Charlotte’s legal defense. Additionally, he mentioned, “Charlotte specifically wanted me to tell you that she’s really good in goal. She said, ‘Please tell them that.’

The Princess of Wales, Kate Middleton, chimed in, sharing her own pride in her daughter’s newfound interests. She highlighted that she and Charlotte both share a love for netball. Kate was raised in an athletic-focused culture. Sports are in the family blood. It is clear that both Prince William and Kate Middleton have a major competitive streak when it comes to their athletic endeavors. Most notably, they’ve famously teamed up during the Olympics and other sporting events. One personal highlight is their running race against Prince Harry during the Team Heads Together London Marathon Training.

Their competitive nature and approach to getting things done often results in some pretty funny stuff. … they would never complete a tennis match because the desire to win would kick in. Whether the couple’s competition is amicable or not, the nature of their rivalry livens up their public appearances. It’s a reflection, too, of their passion for athletics and good sportsmanship.

Prince William has a fiery competitive streak that Charlotte clearly inherited. This enthusiasm would be in keeping with the spunky competitive attitude of her grand-aunt, Princess Anne. This generational connection only serves to underscore just how much athleticism and competitiveness in particular are lionized in the royal family.

As we settled into a conversation about netball, the former player Ama Agbeze revealed some thrilling news… No wonder she’s been reportedly giving Princess Charlotte lessons on the finer points of the game! She even told me how she has been coaching her little girl to shoot in netball. That’s different because younger players use a shorter net, which makes it very different. Even more importantly, she’s got the smarts! Agbeze followed up, highlighting the young princess’s quickness and agility.
