Shishir Tewari Revolutionizes Data Engineering with AI and Cloud Innovations

Shishir Tewari, Senior Engineering Manager, has more than 19 years of experience in data engineering. As a result, he has established himself as one of the most important players in the field of cloud data platforms. His extensive background encompasses leadership roles across major technology companies including Amazon Web Services (AWS), Google Cloud Platform (GCP), and Databricks. Today, Tewari is honing his craft building a next-gen MDM platform for Procore Technologies. As such, he leads efforts to combine artificial intelligence and machine learning into core data processes.

His non-profit contributions in data engineering have influenced some of the most visible data workflows today. His work removed data movement bottlenecks and ensured that data went smoothly from mission-critical source systems. Tewari’s work is particularly relevant as it addresses a common issue in the industry: many data professionals spend only 20% of their time on actual analysis, while the remaining 80% is consumed by data gathering and cleaning tasks.

Transformative Leadership in Data Engineering

With hands-on expertise across every platform, Tewari is uniquely suited to lead teams that drive successful outcomes through hybrid cloud environments. He excels at leading global teams of 15+ data engineers, building the J.P. Morgan Finance Data Universe. Through his savvy strategy, we now have streamlined data lakes and pipelines that completely enhance our daily operational efficiency.

During his time at J.P. Morgan, Tewari saw to it that the time ratio spent on data preparation and quality assurance was flipped on its head. This level of qualitative and quantitative rigor enabled the production of these fundamental annual reports with significantly improved consistency and timeliness. He stated, “At Morgan Stanley, I led data engineering teams responsible for regulatory compliance and risk analytics,” demonstrating his ability to navigate complex regulatory environments while maintaining high standards of data integrity.

“I have deep experience in Python, SQL, Spark, and cloud platforms like AWS, GCP, and Databricks.” – Shishir Tewari

His technical contributions at J.P. Morgan exemplify what’s possible when the best data engineering practices are leveraged. By minimizing operational drag, these practices empower organizations to move faster and bolder on trusted data-driven insights.

Innovations in MDM and AI Integration

Currently, at Procore Technologies, Tewari is leading the charge in modernizing master data management by incorporating AI/ML into its processes. He believes that good master data management is a key ingredient for growing businesses. “As a developing company, we depend on effective master data management,” he noted.

With his vision at the helm, Procore has started to leverage AI/ML to automate some of the most basic functions like automatic data classification, validation and enrichment. It’s this type of innovation-driven approach that distinguishes Procore from other industry players. It helps increase data quality, strengthen governance, and deliver timely, actionable insights. Tewari remarked, “At Procore, we included AI/ML in our MDM processes to automate data classification, validation, and enrichment, which set us apart.”

His recent book, “AI-Driven Enterprise: Scaling Business Success,” published in 2024 and available on Amazon, elaborates on the strategies for integrating AI into enterprise operations effectively. The insights shared within this publication reflect his commitment to bridging the gap between advanced technological capabilities and practical business applications.

Achieving Cost Efficiency and Real-Time Analytics

While Tewari’s contributions are easily recognized in regard to MDM, he pioneered new approaches to cloud performance optimization for cost efficiency. As an Engineering Manager at LiveRamp, he took the organization from using Snowflake to Databricks. He described this move as essential for empowering next-level AI-based analytics across the enterprise.

“I led the migration from Snowflake to Databricks, optimizing cloud performance and reducing costs.” – Shishir Tewari

This migration, in addition to increasing performance, resulted in significant operational cost savings. By optimizing AWS data lakes for Amazon’s marketing teams, Tewari enabled them to query fresh data instantly and react promptly to customer behavior. His skill to architect systems with performance at the forefront has been critical for organizations looking to be truly analytics driven in real-time.

Tewari agrees that high-quality data is essential to any successful AI strategy. To that end, he claims that no matter how advanced AI models are, they can’t do much when the data they’re based on is outdated. This philosophy informs his work from the smallest studio to the largest public art project.

“I have a passion for technical strategy, innovation, and mentoring future leaders.” – Shishir Tewari
