Ray & Mascari Inc. has announced a voluntary recall of its 4-count vine ripe tomatoes. This action follows their recent detection of a possible contamination with Salmonella (bacteria that can cause foodborne illness). The recall includes tomatoes sold in 4-count clamshell containers that are 20 ounces (1 pound, 4 ounces) or 567 grams. However, the decision was not formally announced until May 3 when it appeared on the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) website.
Ray & Mascari Inc. began the recall process after learning of the outbreak from their supplier. That alert originated from Hanshaw & Capling Farms, located in Immokalee, Florida. Hanshaw & Capling Farms has recalled one lot of vine tomatoes. Ray & Mascari Inc. had already received these tomatoes and then repacked them under their own label. Consumers are urged not to eat any of the recalled tomatoes and should throw them out.
Salmonella bacteria spread through feces and cause severe illness. Yet it continues to rank as one of the leading causes of foodborne illnesses in the US and worldwide. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Salmonella can cause severe illnesses. This risk is disproportionately borne by vulnerable populations, including children under five, people over 65, and immunocompromised individuals.
“Symptoms usually start 6 hours to 6 days after infection and usually last 4 to 7 days,” – CDC.
Most people get better from Salmonella infections without needing treatment in four to seven days. In certain instances, acute symptoms can require medical treatment or even hospitalization.
Ray & Mascari Inc. has a history of taking consumer-protective steps before they are required. The company confirmed that “customers who received the recalled lots have been notified and provided information to further contact their customers and distribution centers with recall instructions.”
Consumers are encouraged to continue to practice food safety and stay informed by checking news reports about this recall. The CDC provides more resources about Salmonella and its symptoms for those looking for more advice.
