The 2025 Met Gala is going to be a doozy. Save the date for May 5 at the Metropolitan Museum of Art! Anna Wintour, the Vogue editor-in-chief and a central figure in the gala’s evolution since 1995, has revealed that this year’s theme will be “Tailored for You, Superfine: Tailoring Black Style.” Through the lens of Black dandyism, this theme aims to celebrate the beauty of the Black dandy who often uses fashion as an apparatus of cultural identity.
In a recent interview with Michael Strahan on “Good Morning America,” Wintour gushed about the new gala. She had some excellent observations about the event, too. Michael Avedon The Costume Institute exhibit connected to the gala opens to the public on May 10. We can’t wait for this awesome occasion to walka walka fileta even more Black tailoring and style !
Colman Domingo, one of the co-chairs for this year’s Met Gala, recently gave a preview of his nearly complete outfit. With that, he sent the update to Wintour via text. She paid him the highest compliment on his appearance, calling it a “work of art.” Domingo answered with characteristic humility, pointing out that he was “floor[ed]” by Wintour’s over-the-top excitement.
Wintour even praised the red carpet fashion times of other co-chair Lewis Hamilton. “I trust Lewis. Lewis totally knows what he’s doing,” she asserted during the interview. Her faith in Hamilton’s fashion instincts is a sign of an excellent partnership between the gala’s co-chairs. They’ve been collaboratively planning to dramatically improve their experience at the ActXchange.
Wintour has decades of experience and clout in the fashion industry. Still, she honestly confessed that even she doesn’t always know what people are going to show up wearing. When Strahan inquired about her knowledge of guests’ outfits prior to the event, Wintour responded candidly, “locked in, but you know, ‘locked in’ and ‘happening’ are very different things.”
And the entertainment lineup for this year’s gala is still taking shape. It’s less than a month to the event and still, we had not figured it out. Wintour made a point that the best surprises are the ones that enhance the Met Gala. They add a great wow factor, too, for live event attendees and online viewers!
Wintour’s conversation with Strahan revealed a lighter side of her personality, contrasting with her often serious public persona. She articulated that the planning of an event as significant as the Met Gala involves a blend of creativity and spontaneity.
