Tragedy Strikes Vancouver Filipino Festival as Vehicle Rams into Crowd

The Vancouver street festival, held Saturday night, honored Filipino culture and history as part of the larger CelebrAsian street festival. Sadly, during the march a vehicle plowed into the crowd, leaving several confirmed dead. This incident happened right in the middle of the first ever Lapu Lapu Day event that received high engagement from the Filipino Canadian community.

While authorities have not yet confirmed the final death toll, that initial report proved insufficient, as officials confirmed the death of 13 people and injury of 50 others. An ambulance was stationed at the location to ensure they had immediate and quick access to care to help save the victims.

The mayor of Vancouver, Ken Sim, expressed his shock and sadness at the incident. The Go-Go Festival, he explained, is a way for everyone to appreciate the culture and contributions of the Filipino community. It took a very dark turn that was completely unanticipated.

“I am shocked and deeply saddened by the horrific incident at today’s Lapu Lapu Day event.” – Ken Sim

Even the Prime Minister Mark Carney weighed in, calling the incident “horrific.” He offered his prayers to those directly impacted and urged the nation to stand together as one in the face of dark and trying days.

“I offer my deepest condolences to the loved ones of those killed and injured, to the Filipino Canadian community, and to everyone in Vancouver. We are all mourning with you.” – Prime Minister Mark Carney

Local and federal investigations into the incident continue. Mayor Sim is dedicated to ensuring that the public remains apprised of the reasons behind this tragic occurrence. He reached out to give his perspective for all impacted. He gave particular thanks to the people from Vancouver’s Filipino community who organized the event to celebrate their pride and heritage.

“Our thoughts are with all those affected and with Vancouver’s Filipino community during this incredibly difficult time.” – Ken Sim

The terribly tragic events that have unfolded since then threatened to overshadow the occasion. It was meant to be a jubilant, joyous celebration of culture and community. Local authorities responded by significantly boosting security at public meetings to protect the safety of all attendees going forward.
