Natalie Portman, the Oscar-winning actress, has recently shared insights into her life as a mother during an interview with Interview Magazine. This news follows closely on the heels of her recent divorce from ex-hubby and father of her two kids, Benjamin Millepied. Reflecting on the joys and challenges of motherhood, Portman asked how her children do not inspire her each and every day.
In the interview, Portman expressed that her kids are “always a source of excitement, because you just see them develop into the individuals they are.” In so doing, she gives voice to the ineffable joy of motherhood. There’s nothing that comes close to the joy she feels in spending time with her children and friends. Portman noted, “I’ve been spending a lot of time with my friends, with their kids and my kids. That’s pretty fun.“
Portman first encountered Millepied on the set of “Black Swan,” where he was the film’s choreographer. Their work together quickly blossomed into a personal relationship as well, culminating in their engagement in 2010. The now married couple tied the knot the first week of August 2012. They welcomed their first child, son Aleph, in 2011, followed by daughter Amalia in 2017.
The couple’s rocky relationship was further complicated by his growing fame, and they eventually decided to divorce in February 2024. So even with this split, Portman’s attention and heart is still very much on being a mom. Her biggest challenge, she said, has been balancing boundaries with her children’s privacy and being an open book about her life.
I’m not a particularly private person in real life — I’ll tell you anything — but in public, it was so clear early on that if you tell people how private you are, your privacy gets respected a lot more, Portman explained during the interview.
She is just beginning to explore this next chapter of her life. Fans get an exclusive look into her life as a newlywed and mom. Portman’s reflections reveal not only her commitment to her children but the balance she seeks between living authentically and protecting her family’s privacy.
