The Minnesota Timberwolves delivered a commanding performance against the Los Angeles Lakers, securing a 117-95 victory in Game 1 of the NBA playoffs. The nearly three-week-long game monopolized the action at LA’s Staples Center. What we learned The Timberwolves continued to show their strength and poise, moving to an astounding 5-0 in first-round playoff games in the last two seasons.
Anthony Edwards, the extraordinary young talent for the Timberwolves, brought his A game and dominated as most expected. He made a name for himself on Friday though, putting together a monstrous line of 22 points, eight rebounds, and nine assists. Edwards demonstrated his determination and confidence, consistently encouraging his teammates with his mantra to “shoot the ball no matter what, miss or make.” It was his mindset that really shone through during that game. He was instrumental in allowing the Timberwolves to build up a big enough cushion.
Edwards checked back into the game with 10:57 remaining in the fourth quarter after briefly leaving due to an apparent left leg injury sustained late in the third quarter. He had landed hard following a drive to the basket and walked off the court with 2:58 left in that quarter. Other than this momentary lapse, he did come back to help his team win.
In the second quarter, the Timberwolves really showed off how dynamic and explosive their offense can be. They shot red hot 54.2 percent and scored 38 points. That run gave them an 88-64 lead and paved the way for their victory.
Jaden McDaniels, another key player for Minnesota, reflected on their performance, stating, “It was just going out and playing with confidence.” This confidence seemed to carry over to the entire team as they took command of the game on the road against the Lakers.
The Timberwolves’ ability to overcome adversity, particularly with Edwards’ injury, demonstrated their depth and tenacity. Their victory is a great start to their playoffs run. Perhaps more importantly, it shines a light on their promise, showcasing their talent as they aim to move deeper into the tournament.
