New studies indicate that ketone supplements may play a key role in combating brain aging associated with insulin resistance. This is an important finding, especially for middle-aged people. This proof of concept study with 101 subjects aged 20 to 79 has unlocked pioneering ketone supplementation findings. This study underscores its great value, particularly for people who have difficulty with severe insulin resistance. They discovered that ketone supplements could be effective in reversing insulin resistance, providing a potential new avenue for staving off age-related cognitive decline.

To test this, the researchers split study participants into two groups. One group drank a drink loaded with ketones, while the other drank a similarly caloric sugar-laden drink. The results further revealed that people aged 40–59 gained the greatest effects. Their effect was more than 80% greater than that of the younger adults, aged 20 to 39. The impact appeared to be lowest among the age subgroup of 60 to 79-year-olds. This could indicate that ketone supplementation could result in age-dependent variations in efficacy.

"What we did not anticipate was that the effects might be occurring as early as the 40s," revealed Lilianne Mujica-Parodi, the senior author of the study and a neuroscientist at Stony Brook University.

Ketone Supplements and Insulin Resistance

The study’s results show that ketone supplementation is particularly effective in middle-aged adults. Participants between the ages of 40–59 experienced an 80% increased effect from the ketone drinks. People between 20 and 39 were affected to a much lower degree. This physiology means that ketone supplements might be especially powerful at this key time, when brain aging starts to speed up drastically.

Additionally, the effect of ketone supplements was the least pronounced in those aged 60 to 79. Early intervention among this population is therefore critical, and this finding underlines how important it is. It implies that starting ketone supplementation before arriving at advanced age would result in greater benefits. However, more studies are needed to know the long-term effects of ketone supplements in all age groups.
