Sam’s Club Embarks on Ambitious Transformation Journey

Sam’s Club revealed its ambitious plans for the next eight to ten years during Walmart Inc.’s 2025 Investment Community Meeting. In a groundbreaking press release on April 11, the company rolled out a thoughtful and ambitious overhaul strategy. Specifically, they want to double their membership, sales, and profit over this time.

The change represents a major pivot for Sam’s Club, which has more than 600 warehouses in the U.S. Chris Nicholas, the then president and CEO of Sam’s Club, emphasized that the business had no walls with its headquarters. Rather, it succeeds on experiences outside the box. He said this is just possible through their physicality, providing a one-of-a-kind and enriched customer experience.

Sam’s Club is on a mission to become the world’s best club retailer and we’re just getting started,” Nicholas declared. Beyond the actual change, he called attention to the fact that it’s one of the fastest and most scalable transformations taking place in retail today.

To make this ambitious vision a reality, Sam’s Club will be remodeling each of its current stores with state-of-the-art technology. The overall new design takes cues from their recently redone helm@Grapevine, Texas. This location is the home of exciting new tools such as Scan & Go technology. On top of that, customers enjoy the added convenience of shipping purchases directly to their home from the store.

Sam’s Club, too, plans to refresh its current fleet of stores. On top of that, the company has 30 new clubs currently in development to further grow its footprint. The company has plans to continue growing in the retail space by opening around 15 new clubs per year, making their next move into the retail landscape.

Nicholas highlighted the role of customer engagement in building a loyal following. “When a member has a meaningful, positive interaction with an associate, they’re more likely to renew and stay loyal,” he said. Just as important, they ensure member experiences are streamlined. This new pilot is part of their overall strategy to transform them into a leader in the club retail space.
