The Yukons government has led the courageous effort against the United States’ pernicious new tariffs. These efforts are clearly aimed at companies owned by Elon Musk. Effective immediately, government rebates on Tesla products will be completely discontinued. These rebates were recently provided under Yukon’s Good Energy program. This program provides major financial incentives to encourage the adoption of electric vehicles. Yukoners can get $3,000 to $5,000 reimbursed on eligible zero-emission vehicles and up to $10,000 for commercial vehicles.
Their Good Energy program provides rebates for both preowned EVs and charging infrastructure. Such an initiative is the first step towards sustainable transportation for Yukon. Given the rapidly rising pressures from U.S. tariffs, the Yukon government has made the decision to end these rebates.
To our astonishment, the Yukon government has cancelled rebate programs. They’re doing it by reducing their communications operation on X, the social media platform formerly called Twitter, now owned by Musk. Government officials claim that the information residents need will still be available through other sources. The business government’s auditing its dealings with Musk’s Starlink satellite internet service. They announced plans to cancel all other accounts that are not critical for maintaining business operations or emergency response.
Since taking office, Premier Ranj Pillai has been outspoken on the damaging effects of U.S. tariffs on Canadian markets. He stressed that these measures are only one piece of a larger strategy to address economic instability. He expressed concern over the likely effect of tariffs on autoworkers across Canada. This extends to everyone who operates in Yukon.
“These tariffs will directly impact Canadian auto workers and the lack of clarity around what this means for global trade will continue to destabilize global markets and leave Canadians — and Yukoners — uneasy about their futures,” – Premier Ranj Pillai.
The Yukon government has introduced measures to stop the sale of American liquor products at government-run liquor stores. This amounts to stopping all future government purchases from U.S. suppliers by the government’s wholesale liquor distributor.
Premier Pillai has engaged in discussions with Prime Minister Mark Carney and other provincial leaders regarding what he described as “unjustified” tariffs targeting the auto sector. Vigorous action by the Yukon government to protect its thriving boondoggle-dependent local economy. As ever, they are intent on ensuring the wellbeing of their residents in these unprecedented times.
