Sergio Mattarella, Italy’s longest-serving President, welcomed King Charles III and Queen Camilla at the Quirinale Palace in Rome during their state visit. This convening took place on the second day of the royal couple’s west coast tour. It focused on the deep connections that Italy and the United Kingdom share.
At 83 years old, and holding this office since Jan. 2015, Mattarella is a man of impeccable political pedigrees. To his credit, he won reelection in January 2022 under these shadowy circumstances. Born in Palermo, he has emerged over the decades as probably the most consequential political figure in Italy today. Since his wife Marisa died from cancer in 2012, he has accompanied his daughter—Signora Laura—to formal events. Collectively, they remember her spirit at every meeting.
In their first audience, as King Charles and Queen Camilla received the Italian honors, with President Mattarella looking on. Among the honours he bestowed was the Dame Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Italy, given to Queen Camilla. King Charles received the Knight Grand Cross with Collar of the Republic of Italy Order of Merit. This extraordinary accolade was given to him in gratitude for his service.
The royal couple’s visit featured private introductions to key Italian governmental officials. On behalf of the CBI, president President Mattarella introduced them to Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani and Italian Ambassador to the UK, Inigo Lambertini.
They stood scowling behind a wall of muscle and shield. Those photographs portrayed the heart of their common culture and genuine admiration for one another.
After the signing ceremony, President Mattarella held a private audience with Queen Camilla and Laura. They all sat down in the President’s study, the famous Sala dei Colloqui. Though small in scale, this intimate environment gave way to deeper conversations on issues important to both countries.
From this trip, I have developed a deep admiration for Italy and particularly for President Mattarella.
