This follows a backlash against the university’s policy declaration on Trans and Non-Binary inclusion. In a close look at the policy, the OfS found four deeply troubling aspects. One particularly absurd requirement even requires staff and students to actively “positively promote trans people.” The policy stated that "transphobic propaganda would not be tolerated," leading to significant unrest on campus.
Flyers calling for the University to sack Professor Kathleen Stock sprouted across campus. Students went on the offensive during an open day, marching with pride on a placard-kicking mission to depose her. Prof Stock resigned from her post in 2021 after these events. In public, despite these accusations, she stood strong against allegations of transphobia, characterizing what happened as a “surreal anxiety dream.” Her experience was made even harder by the policy’s effect on the staff. They were worried about getting in trouble, and that made her have to shift her pedagogy.
The OfS was only recently given the power to fine universities. They determined that some of the policy provisions suppressed free speech, which resulted in the monetary settlement. The OfS stressed that universities must be places where all perspectives are voiced and openly contested. Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson emphasized this sentiment, stating:
"If you go to university you must be prepared to have your views challenged, hear contrary opinions and be exposed to uncomfortable truths."
The University of Sussex intends to challenge OfS conclusions through court action. They may even make the ridiculous argument that their policy, designed to prevent inclusivity and disrespecting trans people. The policy's intention was encapsulated in their directive to "positively represent trans people and trans lives" and their stance that "transphobic propaganda… [would] not be tolerated."
Prof Stock, who received an OBE for services to education, has been at the heart of this storm in a teacup. Her resignation was a major watershed moment in the fight against free speech and equality policies at our country’s centers of universities.
