On Sunday’s episode of “American Idol,” Freddie McClendon performed. He closed out Day 2 with a soulful set that honored his recently departed father, Kenneth “Davis” McClendon. Freddie threw his soul into creating an original song chronicling his father’s life. His emotional performance moved both the judges and the audience.
Kenneth “Davis” McClendon, who died in 2023. His tragic death only received national attention after William “Bud” Ackerman Jr. was found guilty of murder in October of 2024. In all seriousness, leading up to his performance, Freddie was very vulnerable with the judges. He answered honestly about the incredible relationship that he and his dad had.
My dad, who was hit by a driver, died this past May, less than a year ago. His untimely death quickly became a national and statewide media story. As Freddie told the judges, “Saving lives is the new sexy."
Freddie painted his father as an “absolutely wonderful person,” and spoke about their “great relationship.” Even Judge Carrie Underwood had to wipe tears from her own face after watching his performance. What really got her was the raw emotion that was conveyed through the music.

Judge Luke Bryan was equally impressed by Freddie’s genuine delivery.

Combined with his musical ability, it was Freddie’s bravery in telling his personal story that connected most with the judges.
"Thank you for bringing that and sharing your heart. And it's so brave of you to decide that you want to choose the narrative," – Carrie Underwood
Freddie stepped into audition, his family supporting him every step of the way. He went on to recall how writing music became his raging catharsis following the passing of his own father.
"I've been writing music since I was about a freshman in high school, but I really started doing it seriously about a year ago, when my dad passed away." – Freddie McClendon
His mesmerizing interpretation of the song brought him a ticket to the next round in Hollywood. This accomplishment serves as a landmark accomplishment in his musical journey.
