Jeff Baena, acclaimed filmmaker known for his boundary-pushing work in the horror-comedy genre, was discovered dead in his Los Angeles residence. This heartbreaking find had taken place on January 3rd. It took an assistant to track down the 47-year-old director. The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner has ruled his death a suicide. Baena’s death has been referred to as an “unimaginable tragedy” by his family and former wife, actress Aubrey Plaza.
Baena first made a name for himself as the director of the breakout genre-bending horror-comedy hit Life After Beth, which starred Aubrey Plaza in a breakout performance. His production credits include the dark comedy and Festival alum “Joshy.” He received a writing credit for the cult hit “I Heart Huckabees,” which he co-wrote with filmmaker David O. Russell. Baena and Plaza tied the knot in 2021. Over time, they worked together more and more on distinct projects, with Plaza taking leading roles in many of Baena’s films, including “The Little Hours” and “Spin Me Round.”
Despite their creative collaborations, Baena and Plaza had separated as a couple since September 2024. The tragic news of Baena’s death sent a shockwave through the film industry and beyond, as artists and others shared their heartfelt tributes.
In a statement, Baena’s family asked for privacy during this time of deep sadness.
