Princess Margriet took a tumble on the ice during the Hollandse 100, a charitable race at the Thialf ice rink in Heerenveen, Friesland. In response, officials quickly rushed her to the hospital for emergency treatment. The accident happened after the Princess, a regular attender of the event with an impressive record of competing in the event, fractured her humerus. Even though she was completely alert after the fall, emergency staff rushed to her immediately as a precaution. After a complete medical examination, she will be recuperating at home at Het Loo House.
The Hollandse 100 is an annual biking event that raises money for lymph node cancer research. It’s a grueling competition, with participants skating one lap around an ice rink—10 kilometers—before biking 90 kilometers. Princess Margriet, a former member of the International Olympic Committee, has been a regular visitor and fan at previous editions on the ice. She did not ride the 2024 version. Though she was injured, her appearance was a testament to her continued advocacy for charitable endeavors.
After a period in hospital and in line with Dutch royal tradition, Princess Margriet is expected to recover at Het Loo House. She continues to occupy this home jointly with her consort, Pieter van Vollenhoven. Well-known for her engagement in social causes and royal duties, Princess Margriet has made the headlines lately, having recently participated in several major events. In the coming years, you will receive Dutch medalists of the 2024 Summer Paralympic Games in Paris at Noordeinde Palace. After that, take part in the state banquet in Amsterdam on April 17, 2024.
Princess Margriet has long been very close to her eldest Nephew, King Willem-Alexander. The two royals have often collaborated on royal engagements and have attended high-profile events together, such as the Dutch Grand Prix with Queen Maxima. The royal family’s extraordinary engagement in over 4000 public events underscores their dedication to a wide range of domestic and international issues.
