Tragedy Strikes as Fire Claims Lives at North Macedonia Nightclub

A devastating fire engulfed the Pulse nightclub in Kocani, North Macedonia, early Sunday morning, resulting in the tragic loss of 59 lives. The fire broke out during a concert by the hip-hop duo DNK, around 3 am local time (02:00 GMT), when sparks from flares set the ceiling alight. The incident left the small town of Kocani, with a population of approximately 25,000, in mourning.

In addition to the fatalities, 155 people were injured, with 72 individuals remaining hospitalized across the country. Health Minister Arben Taravari confirmed that 101 patients are receiving treatment abroad. The victims' list, released by the ministry, revealed that 41 of those who perished were in their 20s or younger, including three 17-year-olds.

The tragedy has led to an investigation into the lack of fire safety measures at the nightclub. Authorities have detained more than 20 people, including seven police officers, as part of the probe. Allegations have surfaced that the club's permits were obtained illegally, raising serious concerns about regulatory oversight.

Ana Kostadinovska, a local resident, expressed her grief and loss following the tragedy.

"A part of my second family has left. Along with them, my soul."

"All that remains is ashes and emptiness … and who would have thought that emptiness could hurt so much."

Orthodox Archbishop Stefan offered words of solace and prayers for the victims and their families.

"We pray constantly for the salvation of the innocent victims, holding memorial services for the deceased and offering prayers for the healing of the injured, as well as for the comfort of their families and loved ones."
