The Good Future Foundation recently organized a pivotal event focused on the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) in educational settings, held at Belgrave St Bartholomew's Academy. More than 40 educators gathered for a full-day session to discuss how AI can be leveraged to enhance teaching methods and to address potential challenges. The event marked the beginning of a nationwide initiative by the Foundation to conduct similar sessions across the country.
During the session, teachers explored various ways to incorporate AI into their teaching practices. They also deliberated on the obstacles AI could present in educational environments. Despite the enthusiasm, confidence among educators regarding AI remains low, with only a little over a quarter expressing confidence in using AI effectively.
The government has expressed strong support for AI in education, viewing it as a "generational opportunity" crucial for Britain's educational future. Daniel Emmerson, the executive director of the Good Future Foundation, emphasized AI's significant role in shaping future educational landscapes.
Labour MP Allison Gardner commended Belgrave St Bartholomew's Academy for its innovative use of AI in teaching.
"I want children from Stoke, in our community, to lead the way in utilising this opportunity so they are able to have the best start in life," said Gardner.
Daniel Drakeley, deputy head teacher at St Paul's C of E Primary, shared his experience with AI in the classroom, noting that most teachers are already incorporating AI into their teaching strategies. Attendees at the event were involved in designing practical applications of AI for their respective schools to enhance learning outcomes.
George Barlow, principal of Belgrave St Bartholomew's, highlighted the importance of embracing innovation in education.
"We can ensure that our children are the ones who are equipped with the right skills and education to take advantage of the opportunities," stated Barlow.
He further stressed the need for educators to receive adequate support to understand and implement AI technology confidently.
"It is vital that our educators are given the support they need to understand and implement this technology in the classroom to confidently prepare all students to benefit from and succeed in an AI-infused world," Barlow added.
